Because both hands were needed for this new weapon, the hoplon had to be abandoned for a much smaller, lighter shield which was slung over the shoulder. The Macedonians (Philip II, Alexander's father) then developed the phalanx, centered around their new weapon: the sarissa, a spear about twice as long as normal. (Later the oblique attack was developed, where one side of the line was asymmetrically reinforced such that you would force a retreat rapidly on that side and then curl down the whole enemy line from the side, routing them.) The Greeks had 9 foot long spears and stood shoulder to shoulder with their large, heavy shields, called hoplon. The tactics of the day were primarily to line up and march straight at your opponent. The phalanx was developed in response to the standard Greek hoplite formation, which was a very rigid, fixed heavy infantry formation.
